On April 3rd, H.E Erelu Bisi Fayemi delivered the 3rd Annual Impact Legacy Lecture in honor of the late Innocent Ckukwuemeka Chukwuma, a distinguished human rights activist and social entrepreneur. The event attracted a diverse audience of friends, family, and community leaders, all gathered to celebrate Innocent's remarkable contributions to social justice and human rights.
In her compelling lecture, Erelu focused on Innocent Chukwuma’s enduring legacy as a champion of feminist values. She emphasized that true justice and equality cannot be achieved without the active participation of women, highlighting Chukwuma's belief that any work for human rights would be rendered hypocritical if it did not reflect genuine personal convictions. "Innocent was one of the rare men who understood that without the active participation of women, any semblance of justice would be unthinkable," Erelu stated, honoring his commitment as an unapologetic male feminist.
Erelu further underscored the necessity of engaging men as allies in addressing patriarchal structures, urging them to use their influence to promote gender equality. Quoting the late Thomas Sankara, she reminded attendees, "There is no true social revolution without the liberation of women," reinforcing the idea that societal transformation requires inclusive participation.
The event also featured the unveiling of a biography titled "Against All Odds: A Biography of Innocent Chukwuma," which chronicles the life and impact of the late activist. Erelu expressed her gratitude to Josephine Effah-Chukwuma, Innocent's wife, for inviting her to deliver the lecture, and she extended blessings for Josephine and their children as they carry forward Innocent’s legacy.
Additionally, Ambassador (Dr) Eniola Ajayi accompanied Erelu at the event, adding to the warmth and solidarity shared among attendees as they collectively honored Innocent Chukwuma’s life and work.
The lecture served not only as a tribute to a significant figure in the human rights movement but also as an urgent call to action for continued advocacy towards equality and justice. Erelu Bisi Fayemi’s address resonated deeply, inspiring attendees to reflect on their roles in fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
