The former Governor noted that while the current administration has recorded notable achievements, party members must not be complacent, adding that strong performance in governance must be complimented with effective political mobilisation to secure re-election.

Fayemi who admitted that Governor Oyebanji’s superlative performance in the last three years had weakened opposition parties and almost made Ekiti a one-party state, said Inspite of this, concerted efforts must me made so as to make the June 20, 2026 victory a resounding one.

He urged party faithful to close ranks, intensify door-to-door campaigns and continue to project the achievements of the Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji Administration, describing the Governor as a steady and people-oriented leader, who is committed to the development of Ekiti State.

Fayemi further called on party members to remain focused, disciplined and peaceful in their engagements, expressing confidence that with collective effort and vigilance, the APC would record another resounding victory at the next governorship election in the state.

He said "I just want to thank the leadership of the party because when I said as for me and my family we are for Governor Oyebanji, you all queue behind me and I also thank you for supporting the Governor but it's not yet enough, where we are going now is the real business and I don't want us to be complacent that we do not have opposition.

"We must redouble our efforts, even if Governor Oyebanji is the only one on the ballot on June 20, 2026 (which I know is not ), don't let us underrate any party. Let’s go to the poll with all the energy and mobilisation we can muster and make the victory a resounding one”.

Governor Oyebanji, in his remarks at the event, expressed his gratitude to the former Governor and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for their continued support and guidance ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

Governor Oyebanji said the party must approach the election as a united front, stressing that cohesion, loyalty and collective responsibility among members remain critical to sustaining the gains recorded by his administration and securing victory at the polls.

"Well, I don't have much to say. I adopt everything as said by our leader. I will just thank God for what He has done for us in Ekiti and also thank our leader and the leadership of the party. I know that there is nobody today in Ekiti that is not proud of our party.

" Governor Fayemi said something that I want us to think about, that we should channel all the strength we have as a party to the June gubernatorial election. God has delivered us from the crisis of primaries, let's approach the June 20, 2026 election with all the energy we have conserved , all the mobilisation and as a united front and demonstrate to them that this state belongs to us", he added.

Other speakers including the Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Adeoye Aribasoye; Senate Spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu; and State APC Chairman, Barrister Sola Elesin; hailed the Oyebanji -led administration for the impact it has made in the lives of the people in the last three years, a development they said had increased the fortune of the party in Ekiti.

The BAO Effect: Celebrating Oyebanji, the Unifier at 58

By Olayinka Oyebode

Christmas indeed came early for the people of Ekiti State this year. For them the celebration begun on December 10th when the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport in Ado-Ekiti commenced commercial flight operations signaling a new phase of development under the leadership of Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji as Governor of the State. On that day, Ekiti did not just celebrate the birth of a world class airport which invariably will bring the markets and the world closer to Ekiti, the people celebrated the power of vision and the beauty of unity. The emphasis was on how unity breeds peace, how peace breeds progress and how that translates into shared prosperity under a visionary leader.

The presence of all the four former governors of the state at the airport event, (three of them on board the inaugural flight), supporting the incumbent Governor and each being given his due recognition for their roles in the airport project and in Ekiti development generally, was a classical example of true leadership. The fragrance of that air of unity was not only sweet to the ear, it was a beauty to behold. It speaks to what a state or a people can achieve when they work in unity. It speaks to the leadership qualities of Governor Oyebanji, whose politics of inclusion has brought every leader and every tendency together in the overall interest of the Ekiti people.

Barely a week after that glorious outing, precisely on December 18th, it was the turn of 4,567 young Ekiti farmers, under the Bring Back the Youth in Agriculture scheme to shine. Governor Oyebanji had presented a total one billion naira cheque to the young farmers as their profit for the 2025 harvest, under the initiative which is being done in partnership with a private concern, YSJ Limited. Exactly a year earlier, the Governor had presented N145 million naira cheque to 911 young farmers- the pioneer set of the initiative. Within a year, enrolment into the scheme moved from 1,000 to 5,000 across the sixteen local government areas of the state. This was achieved through government’s strategic support to the farmers which came in form of free land clearing, provision of seedling, agric extenstion services, tractorisation and market linkages, which in turn has made farming a profitable business in Ekiti.

So, for the families of the 4,567 youth farmers Christmas actually came early, courtesy of an impactful leader who was born this season some fifty-eight years ago, and who is redefining governance, making every day count, making everyday a celebration- (Ojo gbogbo bi odun), by virtue of effective implementation of his six-pillar development agenda and by making the people the centre focus of his policies and programmes.

Oyebanji stands out as a true leader of the people. As noted by a former American President, Ronald Regan, “The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things, but the one who gets people to do the greatest things”. Oyebanji takes pride in creating economic opportunities for the people, he priortises their welfare and wellbeing. Little wonder the people of Ekiti celebrate BAO, as he is fondly called, not only on his birthday but daily with unparalleled gusto.

History teaches us that leaders that are most respected are those who inspire people to stand for something. Governor Oyebanji fits into this category of leaders perfectly because his leadership is characterized by a strong commitment to service, truth and loyalty, emphasizing empowerment over power and inspiring change through practical example. Above all, he believes in the grace of God and the power in His name. Gratitude remains BAO’s lifestyle. He regularly ascribes his success in public service to the special grace he enjoys from God; and the support of the President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; as well as the massive support of Ekitikete home and abroad.

Oyebanji believes Ekiti people, highly rated for their intellect, have no business with poverty. “How can people be brilliant and at the same time be poor.” His six –pillar development agenda anchored on the mantra of shared prosperity for all, was designed to provide the right answer to that poser. Human Capital Development via education- free, qualitative and compulsory from primary to senior secondary school as well as health care delivery –that is available and accessible. The huge investments in human capital development has led to comprehensive renovation of 203 secondary schools and over 900 primary schools, including the state’s special schools. Teaching quality is now better enhanced through proper motivation for teachers and provision of modern learning and teaching facilities. Recently the Governor facilitated the training of 2,000 youths in advanced digital skills including cyber security, software development, artificial intelligence and data analytics in a bid to prepare them for strategic roles in the digital revolution that is bound to happen when the Ekiti Knowledge Zone takes off. Healthcare followed the same logic with comprehensive renovation and equipment of nine general hospitals, and about 105 primary health centres across the state. Through the Ulerawa initiatives, every resident of the state now enjoys and explicit and guaranteed package of essential services, free at the point of care.

Infrastructure is another battlefield where BAO has recorded his most visible laurels. Just about two months ago, he commissioned for use 10 major road projects. This is in addition to about 25 others that had earlier been delivered and put to use. Similarly, his intervention in power infrastructure has led to the reconnection of scores of communities to the national grid. Currently the state is constructing 2x60 MVA transmission stations in Ikere, Ijesa-Isu and Ilupeju Ekiti, while the state’s Independent Power Project (IPP) is powering major government institutions and private businesses.

Oyebanji’s political trajectory is one of the most inspiring in recent history. His journey to the Oke Ayoba Government House started some three years and two months ago. Or, as many have come to believe, it started some 30 years earlier when, as a young university lecturer, he joined the struggle for the creation of Ekiti State in the nineties, where he served as secretary to the Committee on State Creation Committee headed by Chief Deji Fasuan. Working with the committee, which consisted of traditional rulers, and frontline Ekiti leaders, he had a clear understanding of the vision of the founding fathers of the State. The creation of Ekiti State in 1996 paved the way for the first democratically elected state government in May 1999 under the leadership of Governor Niyi Adebayo. Biodun Oyebanji joined the government as a Special Assistant (Parliamentary Affairs) to the Governor, marking his foray into public service. He also served as Special Adviser (Parliamentary Affairs) and later as Chief of Staff to the Governor. During the first term of former Governor Kayode Fayemi, BAO served at different times as Commissioner, Ministry of Integration and Inter-Governmental Affairs; Head, Office of Transformation Strategy and Delivery (OTSD) and Commissioner, Ministry of Budget, Economic Planning and Service Delivery. He also served as Secretary to the State Government between 2018 to 2021, when he resigned to contest the governorship election, which he won and was inaugurated as Governor on October 16, 2022.

On the political turf, BAO’s rare simplicity continues to make him the darling of the people. He feels at home with the grassroots. He attends ward meetings and interacts freely with party faithful. He leads the youth on hiking at Ikogosi and Efon Alaaye hills. On a large scale he regularly holds stakeholders engagement, where he receives feedbacks from the people on quarterly basis. Prior to his emergence as the first ever consensus governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the June 2026 election, no fewer than 350 groups and associations had publicly declared their support for him. This is in addition to the massive support he got from all the former governors of the state, all National and state assembly members as well as the traditional institution and other critical stakeholders.

Since assuming office, Governor Oyebanji has demonstrated that governance can be calm yet impactful, inclusive yet decisive. Under his stewardship Ekiti State has emerged top in some development indices. These include : First position in the BudgIT State Fiscal Transparency League (Q 2. Q 3, 2024 and Q1,and 2, 2025); Ranked first in the PSLI Subnational Audit Efficacy Index (2023); First in the Annual Growth Rate of IGR (2023). Under his watch Ekiti State established the first adapted classrooms in public special schools for Children with Disabilities in Nigeria. Ekiti was also ranked as the state with the second lowest out of school children in Nigeria. Quite importantly, is the significant reduction in infant mortality by 57 percent from 42 per 1,000 in 2019 to 18 per 1,000 in 2024; and infant mortality which reduced by 53 per cent from 57 per 1,000 in 2019 to 44 per 1,000 in 2024.

Today, I join family, friends, associates, and well-wishers across Nigeria and beyond to celebrate a man of uncommon grace, a jinx breaker, a unifier, a change agent, “Mr Solution” the one Ekitikete love to call “Omoluabi Gomina” or “Gomina ayiye”, His Excellency, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, as he marks his 58th birthday. Happy Birthday Your Excellency. The celebration has just begun.

Ekiti Govt Spreads Christmas Cheer to Children with Disabilities

The Ekiti State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive care and social protection by celebrating Christmas with children living with disabilities at the Therapy Centre for Children with Disability, Oke-Oriomi, Ado-Ekiti.

The event, sponsored by the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, brought together children, parents and caregivers for a colourful, fun-filled celebration marked by singing, dancing and the presentation of gifts.

The highlight of the day was the appearance of Santa-Claus, who personally handed out gifts to the children because they are loved, valued and fully included like their peers in regular schools.

Speaking at the programme, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, urged parents to always appreciate and cherish their children, regardless of physical or intellectual challenges, describing every child as a special gift from God.

Princess Agboola praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his consistent love and support for persons with disabilities, noting that his concern for special needs children predates his assumption of office.

She said the Governor’s regular visits to special schools and therapy centres across the state demonstrate that disability issues are not political to him but a lifelong passion.

“For Governor Oyebanji, caring for persons with disabilities is beyond politics. He genuinely worries about how these children are coping and managing. This is something he has been doing even before becoming Governor. To him, it is a way of life,” she said.

The Special Adviser also commended parents for their support and perseverance, cautioning against discrimination, while appreciating staff of the therapy centre for their dedication and commitment to service, praying that their efforts would be divinely rewarded.

In his remarks, one of the beneficiaries, Toluwalase Adeyeye, expressed gratitude to Governor Oyebanji for his continuous support for persons with disabilities, particularly in the provision of food items and operational vehicles, and prayed for God’s continued blessings on the Governor and other supporters of the disability community.

Similarly, Mrs. Olubunmi Ibiteye, speaking on behalf of parents, thanked the Governor for establishing the therapy centre and prioritising special schools across Ekiti State.

She also commended the caregivers for the genuine love and care shown to the children.

The event was attended by key government officials, including Hon. Stephen Abimbola Senior Special Governor’s Office, Mrs. Funmilayo Fatoba, Senior Special Assistant on Rehabilitation and Mental Health, and the Senior Special Assistant on Social Inclusion, Alhaji Fatai Sulaiman among others.

“This clarification has become imperative in view of claims attributed to Engr. Kayode Ojo, suggesting that I endorsed or validated his alleged contributions to the Ekiti Cargo International Airport project. While Engr. Kayode Ojo at some point indicated an intention to construct a fire station at the airport and was shown a location for that purpose, it is important, in the interest of truth and public accountability, to clearly state the facts as follows:

1. Prior to the governorship primary election 2022, Engr. Kayode Ojo conveyed some blocks to the airport premises through his contractor, purportedly in anticipation of constructing a fire station.

2. Immediately after the primary election, his representatives returned to the site and removed all the blocks that had earlier been brought in. At no time were these materials deployed for the construction of the fire station, nor was any material—not even a bag of cement—left behind for that purpose.

3. Throughout my tenure as Technical Adviser on the Airport Project, I did not receive any form of support—financial, material, or technical—from Engr. Kayode Ojo toward the construction of the fire station or any other component of the airport project. It is also on record that the airport fire station was eventually completed by the Ekiti State Government in mid-2024.

Consequently, the claim by Engr. Kayode Ojo that I was referenced or relied upon to validate such assertions is entirely false, misleading, and reckless. I state unequivocally, and on good authority, that these claims are untrue and should be disregarded in their entirety.

This statement is issued solely to correct the public record and to prevent any distortion of facts surrounding the Ekiti Cargo International Airport project.

While expressing appreciation to the youths for their resilience and cooperation throughout the period of the project, the Governor said he is proud of their achievements as it demonstrated that with the right support, training and commitment, young people can drive economic growth and become employers of labour rather than job seekers.

He further urged them to utilize the proceeds wisely by reinvesting it in their farms by expanding their operations, adopting modern technologies and best practices as well as building sustainable agribusiness that can stand the test of time, stressing the need for them to let their success mark the beginning of bigger achievements rather than the end of their journey.

It is also to validate our own our belief in agriculture as a viable and economic pathway, which and reaffirming our administration's commitment to inclusion and sustainable development.

“When we conceived and launched the Bring Back Youth into Agriculture in our State in 2024, our objective was clear, it was to deliberately re-engage young people in agriculture, not as a subsistence activity, but as a profitable business capable of providing sustainable livelihood and strengthening food security in a Ekiti state. I'm proud to announce today that this vision has yielded tangible and measurable results.

“Recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that Ekiti State is one of the states with the lowest food inflation movement in month on month basis.

“What I am saying is that reinvest in your business so that you can grow, if you're taking home one million naira this year, reinvest, such that when you're coming next year to collect cheques you'll be collecting four, five million, that is what this is about, it's not time to start beginning to think that you have arrived and that you are big men and women, these are the early days and i pray you all get bigger and stronger and more prosperous.

“As a government we remain fully committed to creating an enabling environment for youth to thrive, we will continue to support youth driven agricultural initiatives through access to land improved inputs extension services mechanization market linkages and partnership with the private sector, this programme aligns squarely with our administration's shared prosperity agenda as it leads to job creation and contributes significantly towards our quest for food sufficiency, poverty alleviation and general well-being to our stakeholders most especially the ministry of agriculture and food security, and our most valid private partners YSJ farms limited. A New Era for Ekiti North Constituency 1 (Oye/Ikole): The Time is Now for Engr. Olaoluwa Dawodu!

My good people of Oye and Ikole Local Governments, the moment has arrived to make a definitive choice for robust, world-class representation. The time for business-as-usual is over. We stand at a crucial juncture, and the choice we make today will determine the pace of development and the quality of life in Ekiti North Constituency (1) for years to come. That choice is clear: Engineer Olaoluwa Dawodu (EOD).

Engr. Olaoluwa Dawodu is not just a young man seeking office; he is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with a formidable academic foundation built right here in our soil. His journey began at the prestigious Ekiti State University (EKSU) Formerly University of Ado-Ekiti (UNAD), where he earned his Mechanical Engineering degree in 2013. This is an indisputable advantage: a son of the soil who understands our challenges because he was trained here. But EOD's ambition didn't stop at EKSU. He went on to attain a Master of Engineering from Western Sydney University, Australia, and now manages a successful Engineering company, Tite Knox Pty Ltd., consulting for global mining giants like Rio-Tinto and BHP. This is the World-Class Exposure we need, a mind that combines local knowledge with international best practices in infrastructure, technology, and economic development.

For too long, the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite being a party built on progressive ideals, has been criticized for not always giving deserving youth a chance to occupy key legislative roles. We have watched as established hands, often with diminishing returns, continue to recycle themselves in power. Engr. Olaoluwa Dawodu is the Litmus Test our party needs to prove its commitment to the future. He is a committed, experienced, and globally exposed youth who possesses the technical skills and innovative mindset to transcend the current efforts of the occupiers of this office. Electing EOD is a powerful statement that our party and our constituency prioritize competence and capacity over mere seniority. The current representation, despite their efforts, has not delivered the transformative impact that a technologically-driven, development-focused individual like EOD can offer. It is time to replace stagnant efforts with strategic, result-oriented representation.

The name Dawodu is synonymous with unflinching loyalty and commitment to progressive politics in Ekiti State. Engr. Olaoluwa is the proud son of Hon. Tokunbo Dawodu, a foundational pillar whose sacrifices and contributions helped build our movement from the ground up. Hon. Tokunbo Dawodu was instrumental in the evolution of our progressive family: from the days of AD to AC, to ACN, and now the APC. His unwavering commitment was key in the emergence of the party in the 2007 election which was later delivered October 16, 2010 and in support of the incumbent, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji. EOD doesn't just inherit a name; he carries a legacy of genuine, grassroots-trained political service and a deep understanding of the party's ethos.

To the good people of Oye/Ikole Constituency, the time for merely 'being represented' is over. We demand a robust representation that is proactive, innovative, and deeply committed to our development. Engr. Olaoluwa Dawodu offers a unique blend: Youthful Energy and Innovation, World-Class Exposure, and Committed Grassroots Training. Let us unite to send a truly deserving representative to the Green Chamber one who will not only speak for us but will engineer our future. Support Engr. Olaoluwa Dawodu for a new era of excellence and development in Oye/Ikole Constituency.

Oyebanji makes history as first commercial flight lands at Ekiti Airport

…Says Over N49 Billion Expended on Airport Project

… Former Ekiti governors, Senate leader on board the maiden flight

History was made in Ekiti on Wednesday as Governor, Biodun Oyebanji led other dignitaries to receive the first commercial flight at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport, in Ado Ekiti, describing the project as a major milestone in the state’s quest for economic growth and enhanced connectivity.

The United Nigeria aircraft with registration number 5N-BWY and about 50 passengers on board, arrived the airport at about 11:09 am and departed at 12.00 noon for Lagos.

Dignitaries on board the first commercial flight include Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele; three former Governors of the State- Dr Kayode Fayemi, Otunba Niyi Adebayo and Dr Ayodele Fayose. Also on board were members of the National Assembly from Ekiti State; Chairman of United Nigeria Airline, Prof Obiora Okonkwo; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr Yakubu Adam, and a former minister of Aviation, Mr Babatola among others.

They were received by Governor Oyebanji; his wife, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji; Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye; former Governor Segun Oni; Technical Advisor on Airport Project, AVM Sunday Makinde (rtd) and other state officials.

Speaking during the historic event, Governor Oyebanji, who disclosed that over N49 billion was expended on the execution of the project, noted that the investment reflected the state government’s commitment to critical infrastructure that would stimulate development, attract investors and create jobs for the people of the state.

Governor Oyebanji said the airport was strategically designed to support the export of agro-produce, boost value chains and reduce post-harvest losses for farmers, the Governor said the airport would also open Ekiti to global opportunities, particularly in agriculture, commerce and tourism.

Commending his predecessors for their efforts at birthing the airport, particularly Governor Kayode Fayemi who laid the foundation, and took the project to a substantial level, Oyebanji said the completion of the project underscored the gains of continuity in governance.

The Governor, also commended members of the National Assembly from the State for their support towards the actualization of the project, assured that his government would put in place necessary institutional framework and partnership to ensure optimal utilization and sustainability of the project.

While expressing his deepest appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu whose economic reforms freed resources to sub-national and made such project possible for the development of the state, the Governor also thanked the Founder of Afe Babalola University, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) for his selflessness, generosity and unflinching support to the airport project.

The Governor commended Chief Afe Babalola for the donation of navigational aids (CVOR/DME) and control tower equipment worth $1.6 million and the construction of 100-cars capacity car park, at the cost of N356 million

The Governor also appreciate the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN for his relentless support and encouragement in ensuring the completion of this Airport, as well as United Nigeria Airlines for accepting to partner the state.

The Governor charged Ekiti people, particularly the entrepreneurs, investors, farmers and young professionals to the airport to expand their business, access new markets and create wealth, stressing that improved air transport would accelerate trade, tourism and overall economic prosperity in the state.

“This moment is not just the official opening of the airport to commercial passenger operations; it is the launch of a new chapter in our transportation infrastructure development journey. Beyond infrastructural mileage however, this latest achievement is another quintessential testimony to our commitment to the shared vision of a modern, prosperous and forward looking State of our dream.

“The making of this airport is a collective legacy of at least, three Governors before me - Engineer Segun Oni who first conceived the idea, Governor Ayo Fayose who acquired and initially cleared the site and Dr Kayode Fayemi, who, despite all odds, braved the wind of challenges to commence the building of this airport six years ago. Today’s event is therefore an applause to our collective determination. I must however, specially thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for his strong support that enables us to finance this project to completion, my immediate predecessor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, for his relentless courage and determination and Aare Afe Babalola for his huge financial and moral support. Without this trio, this project would have remained a pipe dream.

“In all, a total sum of Forty-Nine Billion, Seven Hundred and Seventy-Four Million, Nine Hundred and Eighty Thousand, Nine Hundred and Seventy-Four Naira and Sixty-One Kobo (N49,774,980,974.61) has been expended directly by the Ekiti State Government. We have had to travel long distances facing high costs and risks before reaching the markets that could benefit us and benefit from us. Today, that challenge is turning into an opportunity with the commencement of commercial flight operations from Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport.

“With this airport, we are bringing the markets closer to our people and the world closer to Ekiti. I therefore urge our people to seize the opportunities that air connectivity brings and tap into the unimaginable economic potential that the aviation sector can bring about”. The Governor stated.

Earlier in his remarks, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, described the event as historic, adding that the event was not just a takeoff of commercial flights at the airport but beginning of new possibilities, economic pathways and a new era in the development of Ekiti State and Nigeria.

The Aviation Minister commended Governor Oyebanji for his exceptional leadership, said the airport would bring about opportunities which include enhanced agricultural capability for farmers, create new market for entrepreneurs and investment opportunities for the citizens, among others.

In their separate goodwill messages, former Governors Segun Oni, Kayode Fayemi, Ayo Fayose and Niyi Adebayo as well as the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele went down memory lane to highlight their individual efforts towards the completion of the project as they expressed their appreciation to Governor Oyebanji for completing the project successfully.

Renowned Legal luminary and founder of Afe Babalola University, Aare Afe Babalola(SAN) commended Governor Oyebanji for his passion for the project which led to its completion.

The Chairman of United Nigeria Airline, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo expressed gratitude to the government and people of Ekiti state for believing and making United Nigeria airline of first choice as he assured residents of Ekiti that the airline will guarantee provision of excellent services adding that the airline is already working out plan to make sure that passengers can fly directly from Ekiti to other state capitals aside Lagos and Abuja.

Ekiti Intensifies Fight Against Cyberbullying as First Lady Leads Advocacy Walk for Women’s Digital Safety

As part of moves to tackle the rising wave of online harassment and technology-enabled violence, the Ekiti State Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady and several civil society organisations, has staged an advocacy walk across major streets and markets in Ado-Ekiti to mark the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

This year’s campaign focuses on the theme: “Unite! End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls.”

The walk, which took off from the Office of the First Lady, drew government officials, civil society actors, market leaders and concerned citizens who marched through the city to raise awareness about the fast-growing threat of cyberbullying, especially against young women and adolescent girls.

Addressing the crowd during the procession, the Wife of the Governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, warned that violence against women had expanded beyond physical assault into a dangerous digital dimension.

She said the prevalence of cyberbullying on platforms such as Facebook, X (Formerly Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, and Telegram had become alarming.

“Women are at the receiving end of the majority of abuses today. What brought us out is the disturbing rise in online violence. Many girls and young women in Ekiti are being harassed, threatened, shamed, and blackmailed on social media. Let me state clearly that such practices will not be tolerated,” she said.

Dr. Oyebanji reminded residents that Ekiti has a functional legal framework, including the Gender-Based Violence Prohibition Law 2019; which criminalises all forms of abuse, both offline and online, urging perpetrators to rethink their actions as violators risk severe penalties.

“Anyone caught posting damaging content to intimidate or harass women will face the full wrath of the law. Victims should not suffer in silence. Report to the Office of the First Lady, the Ministries of Justice and Women Affairs, or the nearest police station. Cyberbullying can push victims into depression, and we must not allow that,” she added.

On her part, The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Peju Babafemi, called for stronger collaboration among civil society organisations, market women, youth groups, and community leaders. She said government alone cannot eliminate digital violence without community support.

“We appreciate Governor Biodun Oyebanji for championing this cause. But this fight needs everyone. We must all stand against cyberbullying and protect our women and girls,” she said.

Also speaking, the Ekiti State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Dayo Apata (SAN), said the state already has strong laws against gender violence, but awareness and enforcement must be intensified.

“The laws are in place, but people are not fully aware of them. That is why this rally is important. We are working closely with the police, NSCDC, NAPTIP and human rights groups to ensure effective implementation. Online harassment attracts stiff penalties; in some cases up to 10 years imprisonment,” Apata warned.

Also, the chairman of Ado North LCDA, Mrs. Adetokunbo Gbadamosi, emphasised the need for continuous sensitisation, warning that anyone caught harassing or blackmailing women online would be sanctioned.

“Our young girls must not allow themselves to be intimidated or manipulated on social media. We will continue to create awareness and enforce the law where necessary,” she said.

Top government officials who participated in the walk include the Deputy Governor Chief (Mrs.) Monisade Afuye, among others, Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun; the Head of Service, Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi; Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Habibat Adubiaro; SA/DG Office of Transformation and Service Delivery, Dr. John Moyo Ekundayo and Local Government Chairpersons.
